DOG FOOD RECIPE WITH Childs BLUEBERRIES
The Food Group is Not Just for People!

Blaze
February 2, 2006 is Blaze's (pictured above) birthday. He is the
poster dog for all of the healthy new line of dog foods which has all of
these neat ingredients because he has never eaten the processed, grain
based dog foods of just a few years ago. Since this recipe has been
posted online in 2006, we have seen many dog food companies start
incorporating the ingredients--fabulous! Let's see how long we can
all get our beloved pets to live with proper nutrition.
Our beloved canine companion
of 10 years died of a tumor despite our buying the best and most
highly acclaimed
manufactured dry dog food available. We
decided
to start making our own
dog food for our English Springer Spaniels. Being farmers, we know
a lot about chemical misuse and trust USA products to
some degree,
but really don't trust food
products produced abroad . After the untimely loss of our pet, we feel
strongly that perhaps better food could have added a few more healthy
years to his life.
Precooked 3 pounds meat diced or cook until it falls apart (skim fat off
top). Dogs are carnivores, so
you need a good meat. Pork has the least chemical transfer compared to
beef or chicken. Organic meat, turkey or venison is best but pork does
well.
I cook a large batch of meat and then freeze it in 3 pound packages to
use as needed. This really saves time. I cook the meat part once every
six months is all and it really does not take up much room in the
refrigerator freezer.

32 oz mixed vegetables
32 oz tomato or spaghetti sauce
3 lbs Childs Pesticide Free blueberries
Handful Walnuts and/or Almonds
8 oz Lentils
8 oz Barley
8 oz Green Split Peas
2 cup Brown Rice cooked in 4 Tsp. Olive Oil
Oatmeal to thicken
3 tablets (3600 mg) Flax oil
3 tablets (3600 mg) Chondroitin
3 tablets (4500 mg) Glucosamine
3

3 tablets MSN
3 multi vitamins
Thaw
meat in your 10 quart stock pan on low heat. Add a touch of garlic if
you want. Simmer vegetables, tomatoes, blueberries, nuts, lentils, split
peas, two cups water and vitamins. Use a rice cooker ($20) and make 2
cups brown rice. Add rice to mixture and stir. Simmer for a little
while. Add 2 cups water or more and stir in Oatmeal to 2" from top of
pan until water is absorbed and you can spoon mixture. Cool and
then refrigerate.

Yours in friendship,
UPDATED
RECIPE FOR DOG FOOD.
July
24, 2010
We now
have three dogs due to our newest addition to our family--Sky King from
a rescue in Connecticut. Evidently, Sky's family lost him maybe at a
rest stop or something and he lived on the streets until the English
Springer Spaniel Rescue saved him at the pound. He is such a friendly
guy and so appreciative of attention. We had to start making bigger
batches so here is that recipe.
We use a 25 quart stock pan and then put the
finished dog food into shoe box size sterlite containers and
refrigerate.
Here is the updated recipe:
Put 5 pounds of meat ($8-10) into 3 gallons of hot
water and bring to a boil stirring. Add 1 pound of brown rice ($1) and
simmer for 40 minutes until the rice is cooked well stirring now and
again. Now add 1 pound of lentils ($1) and 1 pound of split peas ($1)
and simmer for 10 minutes more. You can cut the 40 minute time out by
using a rice cooker and just adding the cooked rice with the lentils and
peas.
Add a 6.5 pound bag of frozen Childs Blueberries
seconds (by order at market for $10 per bag) to the mixture plus 2
pounds of available vegetables. We use zucchini in season and any older
veggies from the refrigerator or frozen mixed vegetables. Add a jar of
spaghetti sauce ($1), a half cup of walnuts or almonds and vitamins and
stir. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until hot. Add oatmeal ($3) to thicken
and let sit and cool and then put in the sterlite. Don't over thicken
with oatmeal. I usually use a 42 oz container of oatmeal.
4 tablets (3600 mg) Flax oil
4 tablets (3600 mg) Chondroitin
4 tablets (4500 mg) Glucosamine
4 tablets Fish Oil
3 tablets MSN
4 multi vitamins
Meat--I use a lot of venison but when that runs
out, ground turkey works well. Also, you can buy a whole pork tenderloin
and ask your butcher to grind it for you into 3 or 5 pounds packets
depending on which recipe you use.
We use 1/4 to 1/2 cup of dry dog food (you pick it)
for crunch and then our dog food and mix it sometimes adding milk or
water. We feed at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Our 107 year old Springer barks like
a puppy he is so excited before dinner. We think the vitamin mixture
really helps him.

Blaze, now 4, has only known the food recipe listed above. He is
the poster dog for this recipe. Lord willing, he will live a long life
beyond our wildest hopes and prove our theory right and make all the
time we spend making his dog food worthwhile. Compared to his father,
his head and bones are larger and he has "real" personality. Almost too
smart. Maybe nutrition helped with his development. Dan and
Carrie.
