DOG FOOD RECIPE WITH Childs BLUEBERRIES

I published my recipe for dog food on the web when webs were new and none of these premium dog foods sold today were available. Although Taste of the Wild is good--I suspect they use imported blueberries laced with herbicides, pesticides and fungicides plus although they use meat--what condition is it in when they use it since no regulations apply. I also don't like the third ingredient--chicken meal but they are better than most.

What I feed my dogs is superior to all that is available anywhere. Copy and use the recipe, if you want. Note that you can modify this recipe to work for you. It is the ingredients and ratio that is important.

Dog Food—This is about a months worth for two dogs.

I use a 25 quart stock pan but you could do the math and adjust this back for a smaller pan if you have a lap dog or something. This recipe should serve as a guideline but you can vary it how you will. The idea is to give your friend a healthy meal that will hopefully prolong his/her life.

I add 6 lbs of meat—see below for details on this.
Add 1 pound of fish fillets—see below for details on this.
I add 5 lbs of blueberry culls—these are the berries we sort out that have a bird peck or are a little pink, etc.
I add good water until the pan is half full.
I add 1 pound of brown rice.
Cover and bring to a boil and then turn down to simmer.
Add 1 pound of lentils.
Add 1 pound of split peas.
Add a few packages of frozen vegetables.
Consider adding vitamins, fish oil, flax oil here unless you pour the smoothie mixture over the top like we do. It is said that heating vitamins causes them to lose potency. We pour our left over blueberry smoothie into the dog food in the morning and that is plenty of vitamins.
Add one jar of spaghetti sauce.

Stir mixture and when the rice is puffed and the everything cooked the way you want, turn off heat and add oatmeal to thicken. I use about 1 and ½ of the large oatmeal containers. Cover and let sit to cool.

Then spoon into your freezer containers and freeze. Take one container out to thaw while you use the next one. Our dogs are about 50 lbs each. We give them 2 cups morning and 2 cups at night with ½ cup of top quality dry dog food—for the crunch. In the morning, we pour blueberry smoothie over the top for the vitamins.

Meat:  Any high quality meat with a low transfer rate for growth hormones and the like is fine--ground turkey or pork or venison. I actually butcher my own deer, and take all the scraps and ribs and bones and boil them. Let it cool so the fat rises to the top and hardens. Skim that off, pull out the bones and package the broth/meat in 3 lbs bags and freeze. I have enough for 1.5 years stored up now from three deer. I also fillet my own bluegills that we catch by the bucket and I throw one pound of that in with the mixture.

Blaze

February 2, 2006 is Blaze's (pictured above)  birthday. He is the poster dog for all of the healthy new line of dog foods which has all of these neat ingredients because he has never eaten the processed, grain based dog foods of just a few years ago. Since this recipe has been posted online in 2006, we have seen many dog food companies start incorporating the ingredients--fabulous!  Let's see how long we can all get our beloved pets to live with proper nutrition.

Our
beloved canine companion of 10 years died of a tumor despite our buying the best and most highly acclaimed manufactured dry dog food available.  We decided to start making our own dog food for our English Springer Spaniels. Being farmerswe know a lot about chemical misuse and trust USA products to some degree,  but really don't trust  food products produced abroad .   After the untimely loss of our pet, we feel strongly that perhaps better food could have added a few more healthy years to his life.

Fit for Human Consumption—

Daniel & Carrie Childs

Blaze, now 6,  has only known the food recipe listed above. He is the poster dog for this recipe. Lord willing, he will live a long life beyond our wildest hopes and prove our theory right and make all the time we spend making his dog food worthwhile. Compared to his father, his head and bones are larger and he has "real" personality. Almost too smart. Maybe nutrition helped with his development.  Dan and Carrie.
